The event opened with a welcome from Åbo Akademi Rector Gunilla Widén and included sessions led by Senior Advisor Sidsel Valmot from the University of Oslo on core qualities, talents, and leadership pitfalls (The Core Quality Quadrant by Daniel Ofman). Participants also engaged in action learning, peer discussions, and a case study on service concept change presented by the University of Helsinki.

The gathering provided a welcome opportunity to reconnect with colleagues from across the Nordic countries and to strengthen the network built during the PLA programme. The participants thank Tapani Harkila, Financial Director at Åbo Akademi University, for a well-organised seminar.

The group’s alumni seminar for 2027 will be hosted by UiT, The Arctic University of Norway.

NUAS Programme for leaders in Administration, cohort of 2019-2020 held their third alumni seminar on 12. -13. of June 2025. This time Karlstad University hosted the event, and pro-Rector Margareta Friman warmly welcomed the group. The academic content consisted of Senior Lecturer Eva Lid Frimans interesting lecture with recent research on remote work, working hours and productivity. Change management is always on top of the agenda for leaders at universities. After an introduction to the theme by senior advisor Sidsel Valmot from University of Oslo, the group worked with a tool to uncover barriers to change (“Immunity to change”). The participants also discussed organizational challenges at their own universities and worked with individual leadership cases.

Thanks again for a successful alumni seminar, and special thanks to Eva Lena Östlin, Head of the Department of Economics and Planning at Karlstad University, for a well-organized seminar.

The professional programme was mainly built around topics suggested by the participants, so this year AI and the consequences for universities was central. Furthermore, the participants contributed with presentations on topics of interest from their own universities, followed by discussions in groups. They then worked with “Action Learning” – sharing personal leadership matters and coaching each other in groups.

“I think we have found a formula that works well for our alumni group”, says Line Altern Halvorsen Valbø from University of Oslo, member of this year’s planning committee, “and it’s wonderful to see how the networking between participants is being strengthened every time we meet. Some also find time to meet in between.”

She also thanks Sidsel Valmot, UiO, for her contribution within leadership development and process facilitation at the seminar. “Now, a new planning committee has been appointed for the next alumni. The class of 2019-2020 lives on!” Line concludes.
