SUMMARY:Leaving X – But What's Next?
DESCRIPTION:Leaving X – But What’s Next? – Research Outreach on Ever New Platforms NUAS Communications webinar 5. February 2025 at 11:00 CET\nMeet three Nordic communicators and researchers\, each with their own experiences from either leaving X or turning to use a new open social platform\, for example LinkedIn or Bluesky.\nFormerly known as Twitter\, X has been a preferred platform for researchers\, as well as crisis management for EU bureaucrats and communicators across the world. Why do so many researchers and education institutions leave X? Despite Elon Musk’s – in some circles – bad reputation\, it is still a viable platform to reach out to the many stakeholders.And\, more urgent – for many communicators working to disseminate and keep a good channel open for our researchers – why and how should we take on the ever-shifting channels\, and how can we build a new group of followers and stay trustworthy as research receivers? \nStåle Tvete Vollan\, Norwegian Academy of Music and member of NUAS Communication Group moderates this highly topical webinar. \nThe webinar is free for all NUAS members.Just click the link here to join the webinar on Zoom (uib.no) on 5. February at 11:00-12:00 CET (IS 10:00-11:00\, FI 12:00-13:00 )https://uib.zoom.us/j/61174822735?pwd=1vSezEjYBrPyZAlZfK1ijLfTwAwNqj.1 \nAt the webinar you will meet:\nMarjo Loisa\, Director of Communications at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare\, Helsinki\, FinlandMarjo Loisa is an experienced communications professional. Previously\, Marjo held the position of Communications Director and Editor-in-Chief at Suomen Ekonomit\, where responsibilities included branding and marketing strategies. Marjo also worked for LUT University as Communications Director 2009 – 2018\, successfully revitalizing the university’s brand and communications. Marjo has also held various reporting and editorial roles at Etelä-Saimaa Newspaper and Sanoma Lehtimedia. Marjo has a Master of Social Sciences in Social Psychology from the University of Tampere and a Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration with a focus on Knowledge Management from LUT University. You can follow Marjo Loisa on LinkedIn. \nGudrun Urd Sylte is Head of Communications at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research\, Bergen\, NorwayGudrun Sylte has a long experience in communicating climate science to different audiences through various channels. The Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research is a research centre studying the Earths climate system\, yet the research is still quickly caught in political debates. As social media has become an important tool for reaching the public\, these channels can be a challenge to manage. Due to such challenges\, the Bjerknes Centre decided last year to leave the platform X and enter Bluesky. You can follow Gudrun Urd Sylte on LinkedIn or BlueSky. \nEmma Elinor Lundin\, PhD\, historian\, Department of Society\, Culture and Identity\, University of Malmö Emma Lundin is a historian specializing in global liberation movements and gender politics\, with a PhD from Birkbeck\, University of London. Her research focuses on transnational activism\, including the anti-apartheid movement and gender quotas in political parties. She teaches history and social sciences at Malmö University and has taught at several top UK universities. Emma Lundin is also an experienced journalist and co-host of the Tomorrow Never Knows podcast. In this webinar\, she will discuss her experiences with Bluesky and its impact on her research and activism. Read more about Emma Lundin on Uni. SUMMARY:NUAS internationalisation dialogue: European University Alliances – a strategic view
DESCRIPTION:AboutProgram and MaterialsRegistrationPractical information\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Background:\nThe European Universities Initiative (EUI) is the most important programme in the field of education and training launched by the European Commission in recent years; a ‘flagship’ with massive financial investment and strong policy focus. The initiative has been very well received by higher education institutions\, not least in the Nordic countries. \nIn this webinar\, we will explore institutional experiences in the Nordics to gain an overview of the reasons for being part of – or not being part of – the EUI. Since the EUI call 2024 has been flagged as perhaps the last one for new alliances\, what possible scenarios do we see for the next few years\, and what will they mean for HEIs who are not yet part of an alliance? What does the EUI mean for internationalisation in general\, and how do Nordic universities respond to the opportunities and challenges presented by the initiative? To put it differently\, if EUI is the answer\, what was the question? \nIn some\, typically larger universities\, the European Universities Initiative is only a part of their internationalisation efforts\, in smaller ones\, being involved in a European University Alliance seems to be their ‘whole’ scope of internationalisation. Does this lead to a concentration of our partnerships and efforts towards Europe and European University Alliances and what happens to other options? Does the EUI create inequality and diminish internationalisation opportunities for universities outside the initiative? How strategic is the EUI? Is it a long-term plan or a “quick fix” to some questions? What will be the impact of this kind of internationalisation in Europe and beyond? \nLearning goals:\n• Participants will understand Nordic EUI involvement• Participants will explore different views and insights on the topic with other Nordic university colleagues \nTarget group:\n• Staff involved or planning to be involved in EUI\, International relations managers and practitioners at NUAS member institutions \n \n \n \n \n \n Introduction to the theme and overview of Nordic involvement by Magnus Hallbåter\, Analyst at the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) \nPanellist:\nKatrine Molan Hansen\, Assistant Director\, European Educational Initiatives\, University of Bergen\, CharmEUShirley Pollak\, Chief Consultant in International Education\, Roskilde University\, European Reform University Alliance\, ERUARúnar Gunnarsson\, Director of International Office\, University of AkureyriAnna Lindahl\, Head of International Relations Office\, Mid Sweden University\, ChallengeEU \nModerator:\nLiisa Järvinen\, Project Manager\, Educational Affairs\, University of Turku\, European Campus of City-Universities EC2U \nWelcoming words by NUAS Internationalisation Group leader Irinja Paakkanen\, Head of International Affairs\, University of Turku and reflections on Discussions by group members Guðlaug Matthildur Jakobsdottir\, Director of International Office\, Reykjavik University and Birgitta Schiørring Madsen\, Senior Consultant\, Aalborg Universitet \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Click here for regestration: \nhttps://utu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CTvIkf6WTRi7KA3kpJ31Ng \n

The conference will be held at the beautiful City Centre campus of University of Helsinki. \nJoin the conference and take part of the discussion among your Nordic colleagues about how to navigate the future of finance with confidence and insight? In the conference we delve into the most pressing financial themes of our time. \n— Eco Budgeting: Uncover the environmental impact of your spending choices and learn how to align public budgets with climate and environmental objectives. Can we make sustainable budgeting a reality?— Cost awareness: Universities are under increasing pressure to justify their expenditures. Gain valuable insights into achieving transparency and accountability and hear more about how new demands and legislation has led to excessive bureaucracy. How do we strike the right balance?— Digital Tools and Transformation: Explore the latest digital tools that change how we work in finance and enhance your AI-literacy. Understand how AI works and why it is crucial to understand its prerequisites for your financial operations. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to stay ahead of the curve and transform your financial strategies for a sustainable and efficient future. Register soon and be part of the conversation! \n \n \n \n \n \n The material from the NUAS conference Adjusting to new demands can be found in this onedrive folder:NUAS Helsinki conference\n(Please note that the folder link is valid only until 31.7.2025) \n—\nWednesday\, May 21st\n20:00 Casual get together for early arrivals at own expense \n—\nThursday\, May 22nd\n09:30 Registration opens\, coffee is served10:00 Welcome to Helsinki\, Introduction to the program \nTheme 1The demand of eco budgetingEco budgeting aims to better understand the environmental impact of spending choices and ensure that public budgets are aligned with climate and environmental objectives. The possibilities and challenges of actually doing that are discussed during this session. \n10:10 Keynote: Nils Lindh\, Environmental Coordinator\, Borås University\, Sweden“If universities don´t stand up to follow climate researchers’ recommendations – then who will?”How the university of Borås did to break the trend of increased emissions from carbon dioxid. \n11:10 Case study no 1\, Jesse Schrage\, NORCE\, Research Institute\, NorwayParis-compliant targets to governance tools: What can universities learn from cities insights from urban climate governance \n11:35 Case study no 2\, GreenSenze\, Origo/KPMG Iceland“Measuring carbon footprint of purchases by invoices – the example of Reykjavik University” \n12:00 Lunch \n13:00 Keynote: Daniel Pargman\, KTH\, Sweden“Academic mobility now and in the future – Who gets to fly?” \nAcademic flying constitutes a large part of the carbon emissions at a research intensive university and we need to reduce our flying if we are to live up to the Paris Agreement and reach our climate targets. But how? The research project “Decreased CO2-emissions in flight-intensive organisations” had access to all data about everything at KTH; who flies when\, where and why. We used this information as input to workshops at different departments to raise awareness and work with these issues\, e.g. how can universities reduce ”unnecessary” flying and reach their climate targets and what does this mean for me as a researcher? \n14:00 Coffee \nTheme 2Cost awareness – an emerging demandThe universities are under pressure to justify their costs and therefore it is important with transparency and insight – but this comes with the risk of increased bureaucracy. How we handle this demand will be explored during this session. \n14:30 Keynote: Shirin Ahlbäck Öberg\, Professor at Dept of Government\, Uppsala University; Sweden“Increased control and increased bureaucratization” \n15:30 Case study no 1\, OsloMet – Controller Siren Linnestad\, OsloMet\, Norway“Cost allocation in education; how to meet the university’s need for economic insigh” \n15:50 Short break \n16:00 Case study no 2\, Lasse Bjerg\, Aarhus University\,“Covering project related indirect costs with external funding” \nSix of the big private funds in Denmark have agreed to partly cover indirect costs related to the research projects that they fund at Danish universities. The six funds account for more than a quarter of the total external funding for Aarhus University\, and their impact on the university economy has increased in recent years. With the agreement\, it has become significantly more sustainable to increase the dependance on private funding. The talk will cover the process for getting to the final agreement\, as well as the analyses that went into estimating the indirect costs. \n16:45 Closing of day 1 \n17:00 Guided tour of Helsinki University \n19:00 Conference dinner \n— \nFriday\, May 23rd\nTheme 3Demands for digital tools and transformationIn this session we are looking into how to utilize digital tools in our daily work. We also learn more about AI-literacy and why it is essential to understand how AI works. \n08:30 Keynote: Laura Ruotsalainen\, Where is AI heading and what should we know about it?Laura Ruotsalainen is a professor in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki\, she is a member of the steering group of the Finnish Center for AI (FCAI) and leads a FCAI Highlight area called AI for Sustainability. She is also vice chair of the newly founded Ellis Institute Finland.Laura will give us a researcher point of view of where we are and where we are heading with AI and what are the things that everyone should know about AI at the moment. \n09:25 “AI in Finance and Accounting”\, Menno Gijzen\, PwCMenno Gijzen is a Senior Manager Data & Technology at PwC\, and he supports finance functions going through digital transformations.Menno will present the outcomes of a survey conducted last autumn with large Finnish companies “AI in Finance and Accounting”. The outcomes of this survey show where finance functions are in their journey of adopting AI\, which finance processes have the most potential\, and what use-cases are on the roadmap. Furthermore\, we look at how investments are made\, and what considerations the companies have with AI implementation. \n10:05 Coffee \n10:25 Case study: University of Helsinki – intelligent automation\, Elina Rajuvaara\, expert RPA & AIThe University of Helsinki (UH) has been utilizing Robotic Process Automation (RPA) since 2018 to automate repetitive tasks. Today\, an in-house Intelligent Automation Team is responsible for automating processes across finance\, human resources\, student services\, the university library\, and other administrative departments. Currently\, the team utilizes both in-house robots and those from external service providers. They are developing AI-driven chatbots to enhance support services and actively train university personnel in using low-code automation tools. \n11:10 Keynote: Linda Mannila\, Associate professor in societal aspects of AI at the Department of Computer Science\, University of Helsinki \nAI literacy as a citizen competence – why does everyone need to know the basics in AI?Linda Mannila’s research focuses on how we can better understand\, teach\, and shape the role of technology in society. Linda is actively involved in projects that explore AI literacy and the societal and cultural implications of AI\, and leads NordicEdAI\, a cross-Nordic network addressing questions related to AI in education and society. She works across sectors to increase understanding of complex technologies and promote critical AI literacy as a fundamental skill for democratic participation and informed decision-making. \n12:00 Closing of the conference \n12:15 Lunch-to-go \n \n \n \n \n \n Welcome to NUAS Economy Conference 2025 in Helsinki\, Finland. Registration opens in January 2025 and closes 30.4.2025. Please note that refundable cancellation is possible only until 31.3 (cancellations always have a 50 € administrative charge)\, after 31.3 cancellations are non-refundable. \nThe price of the conference is 510 € incl VAT (25\,5 %). \nPlease do your registration at:NUAS Economy Conference Helsinki 2025 – University of Helsinki online payment service \n \n \n \n \n \n The City Centre campus of the University of Helsinki is situated in the heart of the city. Our conference will take place in the main building of the university\, just some hundreds of metres from the central railway station. (LINK google maps) \nArriving in Helsinki. \nHelsinki-Vantaa international airport is a bit more than half an hours train ride from the central railway station. The train runs frequently and tickets can be purchased easily via the HSL app or in automats at the train platform on the airport. Both I and P trains from the airport go to the city centre (ie all trains leaving the airport go to the city centre. \nIt takes a bit less than 30 min to the city centre with a taxi. Different taxi companies have different lanes at the airport and their pricing vary. The bigger companies have visible pricing and a taxi ride to the city centre is usually around 35 €. \nSuggested hotels: \nThere is a possibility for cheaper accommodation when in Helsinki\, the University owns Unihome that has hotel like accommodation (and mainly temporary accommodation for international staff and visitors). With the code NUAS one can book accommodation in a single studio for 129e/night or double for 163e/night. Bookings are made here. The offer is until 22.4.2025 and as long as they have rooms available. The location of Unihome/Töölö towers is in Töölö (maps link)\, so a bit more than half an hour walk (2\,5-3km) from where are conference is held. \nHelsinki is a popular conference city with a big selection of hotels. We recommend hotels according to University of Helsinkis “Guide for visitors”.  Please find out more here: \nGuide for visitors | University of Helsinki
